“L’ombre des Ancetres”: Gerard AVEDISSIAN
Picture

On Wednesday September 10th, 2014, at 7pm and under the patronage of Lebanese Culture Minister, Roni Araiji, the Hamazkayin Lucy Tutunjian Art Gallery inaugurated artist Gerard Avedissian’s exhibition titled “L’ombre des Ancetres” or “The shadow of the Ancestors” which features 28 creations of mixed-media, acrylic and linen. The opening ceremony was attended by many artists and art-lovers.

Suzy Derderian

Suzy Derderian delivered the opening speech of the event and spoke about Gerard Avedissian’s great contribution to the Lebanese culture and especially the development of theater and cinema. Derderian also added that Gerard Avedissian’s modern art paintings on the eve of the Armenian Genocide’s 100th anniversary actually contain a special message to us – the worldwide Armenians, our friends and enemies.

Through his compositions, Avedissian pleads the Armenians to remain clinging to the Armenian occupied territories, and insists on the necessity of introducing foreigners to these regions as Armenian territories, as well as showing the enemy that time cannot cloak this fact nor erase the history of these districts, their customs and traditions.

Nouhad Younes

In her words, the representative of the Lebanese Culture minister, Ms. Nouhad Younes, stated that these days it is culture that spreads peace and light, and that it is culture that grants vitality to our lives. She wished that this becomes a dominant atmosphere everywhere.

Younes said that, through his art, Gerard Avedissian builds characters of vibrant and colorful nature. He puts effort to introduce his characters in such a way that they seem familiar to us. It is true that his works are inspired by the Armenian Genocide; however, they inspire hope for the future of Armenians and reflect a will to live.

Avedissian, through his art, tells us that no matter what happens, the joy of living remains prevailing in the life of humanity.

Gerard Avedissian

In the end, the artist said that, through his art, he wants to keep us all away from sadness and spread joy and happiness everywhere. This has been the realization of his life and art and which has become the driving force behind his creativity.

Avedissian’s exhibition will continue until September 30th, 2014 every day from 9:30 am, till 7:30 pm.

Colette KHALAF
